Roots to Wings

About This Project

The artist gathered relevant materials that play important roles or symbolic meanings in the family by investigating maternal migration history and traces of past ancestors across generations and geographical landscapes. Botanical materials, including orchids, coconut shells, sisal ropes, palm branchlets and floating balloons are used to build the installation. These seemingly unrelated materials are reconstructed to form a multi-layered narrative. Material transformation and temporal fluidity as methodologies, this work shows the tension between separation and connection in individual experience. Then, it further extends a reflection on the themes of time, existence and mortality. It provokes enhanced self-awareness and a more precise valuation of closed relationships.
